A clinical social worker, trained in psychotherapy, has a background in sociology, growth and development, advocacy, mental health theory, human behavior, medical issues, and psychology. Social workers are trained in the human condition, societies, communities, human science, children and family relationships, development, movement and settlement, and clinical and medical issues. They also study people and how they interact as a group in a society and as individuals. Inquire how long the social worker has been in business, whether as part of a clinic, school, government office or private practice. Ask how long appointments last and what the rate is. You want to choose a counselor who is easily available, will make time for you when you need it, and is comforting to speak with. Ask if the social worker makes house calls, as many do. Take a drive by the counselor’s office. Is it well maintained and inviting? Appearance can tell you a lot about the professionalism of the counselor. Ask your friends and family for recommendations on the local counselors they trust, or ask your doctor for references.
